Guwahati

Guwahati: The Gateway to the Northeast

Almost every North East India journey begins here, and most travellers make the same mistake — they treat Guwahati as an airport with a hotel attached, landing at night and leaving for Shillong or Kaziranga by morning.

Give it two days instead.

Assam's largest city sprawls along the south bank of the Brahmaputra, a river so vast here that in the monsoon the far shore simply disappears into haze. Guwahati is old — mentioned in the epics as Pragjyotishpura, the City of Eastern Light — and it wears that age lightly, in hilltop shrines, a river full of islands, and a market culture that starts before dawn. It is also the region's practical hub: the busiest airport in the Northeast, its main railhead, and the point from which nearly every itinerary radiates.

Must-Do Experiences in Shillong

The Classic Meghalaya Trail: Shillong + Cherrapunji

The soul of any Meghalaya trip is the legendary Cherrapunji excursion — Nohkalikai Falls plunging 1,115 ft, the limestone labyrinths of Mawsmai Cave, the Seven Sisters Falls, and grassy cliff viewpoints. A dedicated shillong cherrapunji tour package covers all the highlights with private transport — travellers can easily book Shillong Cherrapunji holiday circuits of 4–5 nights.

Dawki, Mawlynnong & the Living Roots

No Meghalaya trip is complete without the magical trio: boating on Dawki's transparent Umngot River, strolling through Mawlynnong — Asia's cleanest village — and crossing a living root bridge at Riwai. The bestselling dawki shillong cherrapunji tour package combines all three with Shillong's city charms in one grand Meghalaya waterfalls and living roots tour of 5–6 nights.
