About Guwahati

Guwahati: The Gateway to the Northeast

Almost every North East India journey begins here, and most travellers make the same mistake — they treat Guwahati as an airport with a hotel attached, landing at night and leaving for Shillong or Kaziranga by morning.

Give it two days instead.

Assam's largest city sprawls along the south bank of the Brahmaputra, a river so vast here that in the monsoon the far shore simply disappears into haze. Guwahati is old — mentioned in the epics as Pragjyotishpura, the City of Eastern Light — and it wears that age lightly, in hilltop shrines, a river full of islands, and a market culture that starts before dawn. It is also the region's practical hub: the busiest airport in the Northeast, its main railhead, and the point from which nearly every itinerary radiates.

  • Kamakhya Temple — One of India's most significant Shakti Peethas and a major centre of Tantric worship, crowning Nilachal Hill with the whole valley below. Its distinctive beehive-shaped Nilachal-style dome dates to a 16th-century reconstruction over far older foundations. Go early; the hill road congests by mid-morning.
  • The Brahmaputra at sunset — Non-negotiable. Take a river cruise from Fancy Bazar or ride the Brahmaputra ropeway to North Guwahati, among the longest river ropeways in India. The light around 5 pm does all the work.
  • Umananda Island — A small Shiva temple on Peacock Island mid-river, reached by ferry from Kachari Ghat. One of the smallest inhabited river islands in the world.
  • Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary — About 50 km east, with the highest density of one-horned rhinos anywhere on Earth. An excellent half-day trip and a useful fallback when Kaziranga is closed.
  • Fancy Bazar and Paltan Bazar — Assam silk (muga, pat, eri), bell-metal work, bamboo craft and single-estate tea, in markets that locals actually use.
  • Assam State Museum, Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Basistha Ashram — An hour each, and the fastest route into Assamese art, archaeology and performing arts.
  • Deepor Beel — A Ramsar wetland on the city's edge and a genuinely good winter birding morning.
  • The launchpad advantage — Shillong, Kaziranga, Majuli and the Arunachal road all begin from here.

Getting to Guwahati

By air

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), at Borjhar, roughly 20–25 km from the city centre (about 45 minutes, traffic depending).

  • The Northeast's busiest airport, with direct daily flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad.
  • Regional connections to Imphal, Agartala, Aizawl, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Shillong, Dimapur, Lilabari and Pasighat.
  • Limited international links, primarily to Bangkok and Dhaka — check current schedules, as these routes change.
  • Prepaid taxis, app cabs and airport shuttles all operate from the terminal.

By rail

Guwahati Junction (GHY) is the principal station and the rail gateway to all eight Northeast states. Kamakhya Junction (KYQ) and New Guwahati (NGC) handle overflow and several long-distance services — check your ticket carefully, as the three are not the same station.

  • From Delhi: Rajdhani Express, roughly 28–30 hours
  • From Kolkata: Saraighat Express and others, roughly 17–20 hours
  • From Bengaluru / Chennai: 50+ hours; flying is strongly advised
  • Onward rail runs to Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Dimapur, Agartala, Silchar and Mendipathar (Meghalaya's only station)

Book sleeper and AC classes well ahead during the October–March peak and around Bihu.

By road

Guwahati sits on NH-27, the Northeast's main arterial highway, with NH-6 running south towards Shillong.

RouteDistanceDriving time
Guwahati → Shillong~100 km3 hrs
Guwahati → Kaziranga~190 km4–5 hrs
Guwahati → Tezpur~180 km4 hrs
Guwahati → Jorhat~310 km6–7 hrs
Guwahati → Siliguri~450 km9–10 hrs
Guwahati → Tawang~500 km2 days

Interstate and long-distance buses operate from ISBT Betkuchi, including ASTC services and private Volvo sleepers to Shillong, Siliguri, Dimapur, Agartala and Aizawl. For anything beyond a city day, hire a car with a local driver — it is the regional default and worth the cost on hill routes.

Permits & documents

None required. Guwahati and the whole of Assam are open to Indian citizens and foreign nationals without an Inner Line Permit.

Plan permits here, though, if you're heading onward: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur all require an ILP for Indian travellers, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for several states. Apply online a few days before travel and carry printed copies — checkpoints may not accept a phone screen. Guwahati is the most convenient base for sorting this out before you move on.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for Guwahati?

Two days covers the city comfortably — Kamakhya, the river, Umananda and the markets. Add a third day if you want Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary or Hajo. Most travellers use Guwahati as a two-night bookend at the start and finish of a longer Northeast trip.

**Do I need a permit to visit Guwahati?**

No. Assam requires no Inner Line Permit for Indian citizens, and foreign nationals need no Protected Area Permit for the state. Permits only become relevant for onward travel to Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur or restricted zones in Sikkim.
